The latest retailer to get LA Gear Originals is E.V.R. in Cincinnati, OH, and since I haven’t been to Ohio since my college roommate’s bachelor party, I jumped on a plane and took a day-trip to see the famous Ray Trimm and get the scoop on how the Originals line of LA Gear sneakers will play in the big C and why this actually may be the best place for an LA Gear revival.

LAGearNews: What’s your first LA Gear memory?

Ray Trimm: I remember the day, it was in 5th grade, and my friend had a pair, and you immediately notice the muticolored laces.

LAG: Can you describe your customer and why the LA Gear Originals styles appeal to him/her?

RT: Our customers are individuals that look to stand out, in a non-eccentric fashion. E.V.R. is based upon vintage goods, as well as exclusive items, and L.A. Gear embodies that.

LAG: This place is amazing. Tell me how EVR got started.

RT: E.V.R. is basically a store I started in my room. I have always enjoyed retro goods, so I started buying from the mall/Ebay. Then, I began to get alot of recognition for my style and people offered to buy my footwear from me. So I knew I was onto something, so I sold sneakers out the trunk of my car. After getting real comfortable with reselling, I learned the basics of retail. From there, E.V.R opened its doors in June 2007. We have a niche but we also have expanded our clientele from teens to middle aged adults.

LAG: Middle aged adults? What’s one of those look like (no mirrors allowed here, please). So what’s your personal favorite LA Gear style/color?

RT: My personal favorite will always be the L.A. Lights, the black/orange pair. But the Star Shooter in black patent is hot too!

LAG: Do you think the LA Lights will take off in Cincinnati?

RT: People are already calling about the LA Lights!! Can’t wait! We should do a collab!

LAG: Good idea!

LA Lights – Time to Turn Them On Again?

We caught up with Sportie LA Co-Owner Isack Fadlon at WSA, and – trailing him breathlessly as he made the rounds at the Venetian suites – managed to ask him a few questions about the relaunch of LA Gear…one of our favorite styles, the LA Lights:

LAGearNews: ACI and Sportie LA are bringing back some great LA Gear classics, are there any plans to revive LA Lights?

Isack Fadlon: Yes, we are definitely bringing back the Lights. Many people have great memories wearing the Lights when they were kids. For many, the lights were synonymous with LA Gear.

LAGN: Who gets more excited about the Lights, kids or adults?

IF: In the past I believe it was the kids. But now, as we re-introduce the lights, I think we’ll see a lot of “big kids” getting very excited about the shoes they used to rock when they were young.

LAGN: Everyone has their favorite styles, but when we talk to people about LA Gear, it seems the Lights made an indelible impression on the entire culture. Was LA Gear really the first to put lights on shoes?

IF: Yes, indeed.

LAGN: Given the advances in shoe technology since the Lights were originally launched, do
you guys have any new applications in the works?

IF: Yes, we are going to, of course, re-introduce the original look of the lights, but we also have some surprises.

LAGN: Do you have any LA Lights in your personal collection?

IF: Of course, I do. How could I not?
