In the article, which broke Sunday, Lance delved into such topics as LA Gear brand-owner ACI’s partnership with top indie retailer Sportie LA, the brand history, his inspirations for the new product, and the upcoming relaunch of LA Lights.

 I was five years old when the L.A. Gear Unstoppable line hit the market in 1989. I was too focused on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to notice, but L.A. Gear was riding high with amazing styles that would become synonymous with the brand: the Women’s Flame and Men’s Fire High come to mind, among many others.

L.A. Gear did not stop there. It followed up that line with huge hits, such as the Catapult in
080729_dg_0084_product.jpg1991 and The Light Ups by Light Gear in 1992-93. When I was 8 or 9, I got my first pair of L.A. Gear shoes – the Kid’s Light Gear. They were my absolute favorite shoes as a kid.

081203_D3_1024_Proof.jpgI’m now 24, and the Director of L.A. Gear Specialty Product. My dad, Steven Jackson, is the CEO of ACI International so I have been around the shoe business my whole life. But there’s a fine line between loving the shoe biz and becoming obsessive about a brand. When I started working for ACI, I tracked down all of the old L.A. Gear catalogs and dug into them the way a baseball fan might dig into a fresh pack of trading cards. As I looked through the catalogs, starting in 1989 and the early 1990′s, I quickly began to feel envious of people who were old enough to

All of the catalogs had some amazing shoes. but the catalog that really stuck out and caught my eye was the 1989-1990 Unstoppable line. I tracked down all of the styles from that time so I could recreated them exactly as they were. It’s now been 20 years since the shoes were on the market, so I figured it would be a great time to bring back the “Unstoppable” line. Not only do men and women my age finally get to experience these cool L.A. Gear shoes, but people who dug these styles – before they became extinct – now have a chance to rock them again.

081203_D3_1055_Proof.jpgThe “Unstoppable” line has just re-launched exclusively at Sportie LA, and people are loving the shoes. It’s a very exciting time for the L.A. Gear company, along with the consumers, bringing back into the marketplace styles that are at once classic and new. I’m not sure if it’s the timing or the staying power of the styles, but it feels like we’ve hit a nerve. And this is only the beginning. NOW ON SALE
